Start with the service, not the website
Define the buyer, problem, deliverable, scope, turnaround time, revision policy, price, and proof before opening a marketplace account. A platform profile is a distribution channel—not the service itself.
Upwork
Upwork centers much of its marketplace around job posts and freelancer proposals, alongside predefined Project Catalog offers. Upwork's current help materials say proposals for most jobs require Connects and that freelancer service fees vary by contract. The exact fee is displayed during the proposal or offer process.
Unpaid work can include profile preparation, portfolio work, searching, proposal writing, interviews, client communication, and revisions. Payment-protection language has conditions; read the current rules rather than treating the phrase as a guarantee.
Fiverr
Fiverr centers its marketplace around packaged services called Gigs. Fiverr's official creation guide says a Gig includes a title, category, pricing, description, requirements, and media. Publishing an offer does not establish impressions, orders, buyer quality, or revenue.
An optional paid seller subscription is not required evidence that a service will sell. Do not purchase an upgrade merely to protect an untested business idea.

Stop conditions
- You cannot explain the deliverable in one sentence.
- Proposal or subscription costs grow without qualified conversations.
- Clients request unpaid samples that resemble usable production work.
- A client asks you to move payment outside required platform protections.
- Your effective hourly rate remains unacceptable after including unpaid acquisition time.
